Journeys: We are reading stories about Lewis and Clark, We are building on our phonics each week while using more organizers. We continue to grow our spelling abilities and are working to memorize those sight words that do not make phonetic sense. Our reading abilities keep growing every week and we are now writing up to three sentences!
My Math: We have learned to count, add, subtract, double addition and subtraction, work on problem solvers and more! We are now taking a look at measurement with time, length, ordinal directions and shapes!
Science: We have been learning about the universe around us and just took a field trip to OMSI to visit the planetarium! We will start our Plant science and Chick unit. We will look at the heredity of each and what that life form needs to survive.Students will be excited to watch the eggs hatch into chicks! We even study and observe butterflies! Science is a very fun subject in first grade!
Religion: We have met in family groups, regularly see our buddies, we attend mass, pray before all meals, and learn from the Second Step program. We are learning about prayer and the many ways God tries to build a personal relationship with each of us. We honor St. Patrick, St. Nicholas, and St. Joseph. We will also explore the 10 commandments and the Apostles journey with Jesus. We listen to the Sunday reading each week,
Social Studies:Our Tall Tale unit has been wrapped up with students learning about Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, and Pecos Bill. We are now looking at different cultures through our Flat Stanley unit. We have prepared our individualized Stanley we will mail them and then will share their adventures when they return. We will grow our map Cardinal Directions as well as learning the where Stanley has visited. Some visit Beaverton while others journey to other countries! We also take a look at their weather and what holiday traditions may be celebrated there.
Art: We enjoy Art lit, led by our amazing parents as well as a lesson each week. We have learned about texture through painting shamrocks and using our fingers we made ridges and smooth textures of green. Currently we have started our Kandinsky inspired spring trees.
